Project 3: Using Color to Create Dynamic Skin Tones

I like this reference because of the look of sheer pleasure on the model’s face as she enjoys her warm beverage, which is how I feel each morning sipping my first cup of tea. I also fell in love with the wonderful bokeh background, with that dappled glow of blurry light. When choosing references for portraiture, try to select ones that you connect with and that makes you excited to draw.

The important thing to remember is that it isn’t necessary to rely upon a standard formula of colors that you use each time. Colors will vary depending on the lighting, your base surface color, the skin tones of your subject, and the reflected colors. As you develop your skills, you’ll train your eye to look for the colors that you see and interpret them so you can adjust as you go.
